Week 8 Term Two

Meet Janelle Harris, Room 14's new teacher from the beginning of Term Three. Miss Harris has many talents; music being one of them! Miss Harris spent the day in R14 and we sang 'In the Jungle' at the end of the day :) Welcome to Target Rd Miss Harris!

We have had a really busy week! We have been saving the poor worms that were flushed out of the lawn by the heavy rain...

...and we have been writing instructions. This is what happens when you instruct someone to clean their teeth with a brush, but not saying what sort of brush...and telling the person to put the paste IN the brush, rather than on it...oh dear!

Today we wrote instructions again. Jaedah explains how to get ready for school:

Meccano

This afternoon we played with Meccano - many thanks to Max's mum for donating this for us to enjoy! It was great seeing the children all interacting with each other and putting to good use their knowledge of simple machines.

Week 7 Term Two

Here is a photo of our famous marble run - I am sure you've heard all about it! It is made up of  (so far!) 13 inclined planes. The marbles play a tune as they skip along the xylophone on their exit from the run! There are plans to make this even more impressive - stay tuned!

Matariki 

Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades. It rises in mid-winter – late May or early June. For many Māori, it heralds the start of a new year. Matariki literally means the 'eyes of god' (mata ariki) or 'little eyes' (mata riki). In New Zealand, it is like a little Thanksgiving. Today Abhi, Aimee and Christine harvested some harakeke with Whaea Ruth. The harakeke symbolises whanau, and the children created stars and have described their families within them :)

                                          Week 6 Term 2

Where shall I begin? So much learning has occurred in Room 14 this week. We have continued with looking at simple machines, with a focus on inclined planes this week. We took a tennis ball each and explored the school...if the ball rolled down it, then it is an inclined plane - this was the overall consensus. We also discussed gravity, and imagined what our class might look like if there was no gravity - messy and funny! We have started to create a marble run and the children are totally fascinated with it. Thank you to those of you who have contributed parts to add to it :)

On Tuesday morning I left an old DVD player and a screwdriver out for the children to explore, with the instruction to use the screwdriver as a wedge and a lever to open it up. The children  had already removed all the screws a couple of weeks ago, and seemed satisfied with removing the screws and exploring no further...clearly they did not know what was under the cover! WELL - the discussion was so in depth that I had to get Miss Daisy to come at witness it. What impressed me the most the circuit board being described as looking like a city - and it does!

Lever Fever!

Six broken rulers, maths equipment 'pinged' all around the room, loads of laughter...who knew levers could be so much fun! 

While I am sure you have all heard about levers, have you heard about our 'Daily Maths' guest teacher? Here is teacher Jo Jo in action today.

Congratulations to Fiona for receiving a certificate at assembly today for displaying the value Respect. Next week we will be focusing on Perseverance; you could spend a moment discussing what you think this means, and why it is important with your child.

Today we used the heads of screws and bolts to decorate the screws we drew. Mrs Marsh forgot to put sponges in the paint trays to lessen the amount of paint that went on the heads...oops! They are still effective, and the finished products will be on display by mid next week.

On Thursday we met with our Buddy class. We went to the hall and Mrs Lee played different types of classical music while we observed bubbles...here are our poems about this experience.

Bubbles are like a wind current floating on the river, floating like a lovely flower.
