Week 4
Welcoming New Friends
Way back in Week 4 we welcomed some new friends into Room 14, and said see ya soon to friends who have moved into other classes.
We buddied up to show our new friends around our classroom and teach them a few things about how we play in Room 14.
Liam drew an amazing picture and we worked together to sound out the word "snowman" so that he could write it underneath.
Week 5
The TRS Learner
We are learning about what makes a good learner. Mrs Boxen has worked hard to think of one thing for every letter of our school's name: TARGET.
In Week 5 we focused on T which means "I TALK about my learning". Talking about our learning means asking questions, talking about our goals and what we can do to meet and surpass our goals, and even sometimes saying "I don't know"!
In Week 6 we focused on A which stands for "Student Agency: I am in charge of my learning". Being in charge of our own learning means working hard and taking responsibility to meet our goals. It also means that no one else can do our learning for us!
Eric spotted this on our classroom whiteboard and stopped to read it.
Daily Maths
Some of us got to work with new Daily Maths buddies! We worked hard to show our new friends what happens in Daily Maths and what we need to do. Some of us are finding Daily Maths a bit tricky but we are being super resilient and we just keep trying!
Learning Through Play
Shayan and Shravanth discovered the Reading Buddies in our Library Corner! Our reading buddies are teddies that we can take to a space around our classroom to read a story to.
Preston, Johannes, Criston, Layla and Ronan put on their creative hats to use our blocks build this impressive creation!
Johannes, Isaac, Ardrion and Daniel were in fits of giggles playing Number Twister.
Lola and Ariana were busy playing with the playdough when Ariana got a phone call and had to stop to answer her cellphone!
Sienna and Sana got busy creating things on our Craft Table.
Baran and Layla enjoyed playing Teachers.
Eli and Johannes made some amazing playdough creations!
Discovery Time
Room 14 takes part in Discovery Time every week with Rooms 12 and 13. We come together and talk about the different ways we can use our school values while we play, and then get to choose one of the activities that are led by the teachers. In Week 5 Miss Harris took some people out for a play on the playground while Miss An-Ya helped people make air-dry clay creations, and Mrs Mackay helped people to do some paper collage and painting.
Baking cakes!
A group of children organised their own game with a ball.
Maui was jumping for joy when he found some x's on the netball courts! They marked the spot of some treasure; dinosaur parts and princess clothes for Miss Harris! Shayan joined in with the hunt to find all of the dinosaur pieces too.
Maui carrying his Dinosaur parts.
Taking notes when his dinosaur went missing!
Drawing some ocean life with chalk.
Phoenix made a fish movie theater!
Phoenix was also very proud of his family of fish and was suprised to learn that a group of fish is called a school!
Mindfulness
Mindfulness has been in the news a lot lately. We try to include mindfulness in our classroom day using Zen Den on YouTube and Flow on GoNoodle. Mindfulness is a great way for us to relax after a busy day of learning, and to think about all of the things we have learnt. It also helps us to let go of any stress and anxiousness we are feeling about things that may be happening, and things that we may have found annoying.
For more information on Mindfulness please see the article recently shown on One News by clicking here.
Week 6
The Backwards Game
Stanley and Preston noticed The Backwards Game in some of their friends books and wanted a copy for themselves! The Backwards Game helps us to practice counting backwards. We can decorate our backwards games however we want; a lot of people add traps to their game!
Learning Through Play
More creations being made at the craft table!
Sana used the beads to make this amazing series of patterns!
Making cakes with playdough!
Ring Words
We try to think of a lot of different ways to practice our Ring Words during reading time. Sarah and Baran practiced their words by making them out of playdough. We also practice our Ring Words by writing them across and down, using our finger to write them in a tray of sand, cutting the letters out of a magazine and gluing them in our books to spell each word, writing them using bubble writing, doing rainbow writing, painting them on the concrete using water, and many more! Ask your child their favourite way to practice their Ring Words, and maybe you can think of a new way to practice them at home!
Practicing our Letter Sounds
Baran, Shayan and Shravanth worked hard to match the letter sound to the picture and see how many they could match!
Cross Country
This week we participated in the school Cross Country. We loved cheering on our friends and taking part in the atmosphere in the barn before our race. Miss Harris rocked out with her speaker and a few of us got up to dance while we waited. Others played clapping games and paper scissors rock.
Year 2 girls lined up and ready to race!
And we're off!
Year 2 boys cheering for the girls.
Mindfulness
We love ending the day with mindfulness!
Room 14 News
This week for News Ronan brought in a toy he got from the Auckland Zoo which was a crocodile that he had to put in water for 3 weeks before it hatched! It came with some information which told us that they can grow up to 5 metres! Luckily Ronan also brought in a tape measure so we could see how long that is. Wow!
Happy Fathers Day!
We worked hard on Thursday to make some cookies for Dad. We designed our shortbread cookie on a piece of paper before coming up to the bean table and getting 30 seconds to shape the cookie dough before decorating it with some M'&'M's. It was a bit tricky to shape the dough so quickly but we didn't want all the butter to melt so we had to work fast.
We hoped all of the Dad's out there loved your Fathers Day shortbread!
Playdough
Kobe made his favourite Pokemon out of playdough; Ash Greninja!Folk Dancing
On Friday mornings we go down to the hall with Mrs Boxen and Mrs Varney for assembly, Jump Jam, and to practice our Folk Dancing. When we got back, some of the girls in Room 14 practiced one of their favourite songs!
We are practicing our folk dancing to get ready to share it with you at our 50th Jubilee celebration in Week 10, on Wednesday the 26th of September. We would love for you to come along to see it!
