Term 3 Weeks 7 and 8

Week 7

Making Maths Fun!

This week for maths, Baran, Shayan, Lola, Shravanth, Criston, Stanley, Sana and Preston all worked on giving our poor caterpillars some legs! We rolled the 12 sided dice to see how many legs we needed to give our caterpillars, and then got busy putting pegs on as their legs!

Cup Phones

We made some cup phones using wool and paper cups so that we could communicate with our friends. We found they worked better when we pulled the wool nice and tight.

Eli trying to listen to two people at once!

We twisted one set of cup phones around another set to see if 3 people could hear one person at the same time.

Week 8

What have you got there?

Johannes crawled out from under the table with a cup of stationary just as Miss Harris snapped this picture!

The spuds, they are a growing!

Our potato plants have gone wild! When your potatoes sprout above the soil, adding more soil on top will mean that you get more and more potatoes from your plants! In Week 8 Isaac used up the rest of the potting mix to cover our potatoes.

Learning Through Play

Lola, Ardrion and Izzy are busy playing in our Whanau Corner.

Strong Fingers for Everyone!

Shravanth and Baran are using their fingertips to roll some Plasticine. Plasticine is tougher to work than playdough, and is great for making our fingers stronger. Making our fingers strong will help to make our writing small and neat and beautiful. Other things that will make our fingers stronger are:
  • Colouring fine spaces
  • Carefully tracing over things drawn or written in highlighter
  • Playing with stickers
  • Cutting things with scissors
  • Using pegs between our thumb and index finger, or "pincers" as Miss Harris calls them
  • Threading beads onto string or nylon
Baran, Shravanth and Shayan are all working on making their fingers stronger and use one of the above things to help their finger strength at reading time every day.

Reading a Story

Baran loves to read stories to her friends in the library corner.

Miss McDonald

Sana took on the role of the teacher here for Preston, Criston and Stanley. Miss Harris also joined the class as a student! Miss McDonald helped us to learn our ring words and do some maths, and she even gave Miss Harris a sticker for remembering to raise her hand!

Bug Hunting

A group of us went outside into the garden to hunt for bugs which we put into an ice cream container. We found a worm as well so made sure it had some dirt and things to eat, just like in our worm farm.

Construction Corner Creations

Daniel worked hard in the construction corner to create this castle!

Chase was proud of the house he made.

Recognising Number Patterns

This week Shayan, Shravanth, Preston, criston, Lola and Baran worked on recognising number patterns to 10 using tens frames, dice, and dominoes. We worked in pairs to play Domino Parking Lot where you have to add the dots on both sides of the domino and put it into the right parking space.

After finishing off our domino parking lots, we moved on to a game of classic dominoes where we had to match the same numbers by touching them together.

Discovery Time

This week for Discovery Time, Room 14 turned into a beauty salon with the help of a few of our buddies from Room 4! We had foundation (mixed with a heap of moisturiser!), eye shadow, lipstick, nail polish, perfume, and bobby pins to do our hair. The girls had a blast, and we even had some boys stop in for a bit of perfume!

To wrap up discovery time, Room 12 performed "You Are My Sunshine"; a song that they have been practicing using American Sign Language!
