Term 2 Week 3 and 4

Week 3

Garden Love

Isaac has continued to look after our patch of garden with heaps of love and care. Look how big those Broccoli plants are getting!

Ring Words

Kate took a close look at all of the ring words that we have in Room 14.

If your child needs to have their ring words updated please contact Miss Harris.

BINGO!

This week we pulled out sight word bingo and had some fun playing in class! Christine helped us to play.

More Bugs!

Eli found a cricket and the boys all worked together to take care of it.

Chalk!

Kate and Jasmine had a great time making some chalk creations outside on the courts. They traced around their bodies!

Happy Birthday, Isaac!

Isaac celebrated his 7th birthday with his classmates by bringing in this delicious chocolate cake! Yum!

Simple Machines

We had lots of fun with simple machines in week 3. Johannes used some of our maths equipment to fashion a catapult which he showed to the class before we all raced off to make our own. There were things flying everywhere!

A catapult uses a lever and has a fulcrum on the base.

Isaac used this book to make an inclined plane!

Inclined Plane Art

Whaea Karen helped us to create some collaborative art by rolling marbles dipped in paint down an inclined plane. We had to be very careful the marbles didn't roll down the drain!

Room 14 News

Johannes brought his remote control car in to show to everyone. He showed us how it could drive on its back wheels, which is his favourite thing the car can do.

Writing

Kate worked hard to write a funny story that she shared with Mark.

HAROLD!

We were so excited to meet Harold this week!
Harold and Jenni helped us to learn all about being a good friend.

Isaac filled Harold in on all the ways we can be a good friend.

We woke up our brains by rubbing our tummy with one hand and patting our head or shoulder with the other; it's super tricky!

Our brain still wasn't quite awake so we tried putting one hand on our nose and putting the other hand on our opposite ear and then swapping over quickly. Gian and Liam F are pro's!

Jenni taught us about what to do if our friend looks really upset or angry. We learnt that sometimes if our friend is angry they just need some space to calm down before we ask them if they are ok.

We can see stars!

Nude Food!

We all work really hard in Room 14 to look after our environment.
Look at all those Environment Awards!

It's time to play!

The boys in Room 14 love to read Pokemon books and "battle" each other!

Kate and Jasmine played a game of chess to help Jasmine with her adding to 5!

Hannah, Sarah, and Ariana made an awesome tower out of Beta Blocks.

Gian figured out that he could make a pulley using some string that was holding Eli's toy fish, and the plastic hooks in the cloak bay!

A pulley is a simple machine.

Playing with Boxes

Thank you so much to everyone who has donated boxes for us! We absolutely love playing with them and using our imagination to create all sorts of things!

Kate and Jasmine used the paper cups to sort different objects.

Still reading those Pokemon books!

Gian's car is just missing a simple machine... Wheel and Axle!

Eli made a time machine that you needed to climb inside before it would transport you.

Liam made another time machine complete with buttons, levers, and all sorts of other components! He also had a very specific set of steps in order to work his time machine.

Discovery Time!

...or should I say Discovery SLIME...

For Discovery Time in Week 3 Miss Harris and Whaea Karen helped us to make slime, playdough, and Oobleck. We had a blast!

We also had Beyblades... of course!

Mrs O filled in for Mrs Mackay in Room 13 and brought in lots of cool small parts for us to fiddle with. Ronan was sad to part with his creation.

Miss An-Ya set up some loose part play using some simple machines, as well as some sewing.

Certificates

Well done to Aria and Ariana who worked hard to earn their certificates for Week 3.

Pink Day!

Pink day is a day for all of us to wear pink and fight against bullying. Every class chose a few best dressed in the junior school. So much pink!

Slugs and Caterpillars

Isaac noticed that something has been eating our Broccoli plants so he devised a trap (scroll up for Miss An-Ya's video where Isaac explains his trap).

We looked a little closer and spotted two very fat, very green caterpillars! Of course the boys in Room 14 were overjoyed. Johannes named one of the caterpillars Pizza Peter.

Welcome to Target Road School, Lola!

On Friday afternoon we got to meet our new classmate, Lola. We had a great time with her playing with the slime and are so happy for her to be joining our class!

Week 4

Haere Ra, Harold!

For our last visit to Harold we learned about ways to be nice to a friend and ways to help a friend if they are in trouble. We learned that if our friend is sad we can ask them why they are feeling sad and think of ways to cheer them up.

We read a book called "The Wolf's Colourful Coat" where wolf was alone and feeling unhappy. We talked about things we could do if we were alone and feeling unhappy. Some of our ideas were:
  • Find a space where you feel safe
  • Find someone you trust to talk to. A person you trust could be a friend, the police, Harold or someone else that you trust, a family member, or a teacher.
We also got to see Harold again and we saw the stars!

Simple Machine Hunters

Now that we know about some more simple machines, we headed back out into the playground to see if we could find all of the simple machines on our Junior playground. We found lots of inclined planes, wheels and axles, and so, so many screws!

A Break in the Rain

Tuesday was a very wet day but we spotted a break in the weather just after morning tea so popped down to the senior playground to explore down there.

We found some huge puddles and some students in Room 14 had come to school equipped with their gumboots so they were able to walk carefully through the puddles, being careful not to get muddy and splash their friends with the cold water!

A CARROT!

This week we noticed a tiny carrot had made it's way out of the soil! We were all very excited to see that we had grown a real carrot, even if it was tiny!

Vowels

This week we sang a song about vowels to the tune of Bingo, then we coloured all of the vowels in our poem in different colours. It took ages to get all of the vowels!

Sharing our Writing

We are hoping to enter a competition to win some power tools for the school and a small trip away for Mr Cullen, our caretaker. We sat down this to think about ways we could dress Mr Cullen up before his glamour shoot which Mrs Taylor has kindly offered to photograph for us. When we had finished our writing we sat in a circle to share our ideas with our friends.

Watch this space for the pictures of Mr Cullen!

Rosella's!

While Isaac was tending to our class garden, he rushed in to tell us that he had spotted a brightly coloured bird in the trees! We stopped our work and rushed out to take a look. Eli quickly told us that it is called a Rosella! Unfortunately Miss Harris wasn't able to get a good picture.

I wonder if you can spot the Rosella?

Children are the experts here!

Children excel at play and it provides so much scope for education.

Jasmine used playing cards to practice her addition.

These creations help to make our fingers stronger so that we can get better at fiddly little things and tidy handwriting.

Aria and Renata sorted these cards in lots of different ways.

Discovery Time

To wrap up Week 4, Mrs Mackay took groups of students to make pikelets (they were delicious!), Miss An-Ya had some construction toys for us to play with and helped us to make clothes for dolls, and Miss Harris brought out lots of board games and card games for us to play.
